If your export is downloading as a .txt file instead of a .csv, there may be settings or behaviours on your device or browser affecting the process. Below are some common reasons for this and how to check or resolve the issue:
Common Causes
- Browser or Download Manager Behaviour
Some browsers or security tools/proxies may rename your file if they don’t recognise the file’s type—for example, treating it astext/plaininstead oftext/csv. - Corporate Security or Antivirus Software
Some company networks or antivirus programs may rename or sanitise downloaded files, changing.csvto.txt. - “Save As” in Excel or Notepad
Opening the file and then using “Save As” in Notepad will save it as.txtby default. Excel’s “Text (Tab delimited)” also creates a.txtfile. - Hidden File Extensions in Windows
If Windows is set to hide file extensions, a file namedexport.csvcould be renamed and becomeexport.csv.txt—which can look like a.csvin some views but is actually a.txt. - Device or OS Differences
Download behaviour can vary on mobile devices, tablets, and some Mac/Chrome combinations, which may result in the wrong extension.
How to Confirm and Fix
- Check the file content:
Open the file in Notepad. If it’s comma-separated with a header row on top, it’s a proper CSV file. You can simply rename the extension from.txtto.csv. - Check your device/browser:
Let us know which browser, operating system, and device you used, and whether you are using a managed (corporate) device or security software. - Try another browser or device:
Download the export again using a different browser (or another device). If the file downloads correctly as.csvelsewhere, the issue is specific to your current setup. - Tab-delimited files:
If the exported file is tab-delimited rather than comma-separated, it could be due to re-saving through Excel using the “Text (Tab delimited)” format.
If you are still having issue you will need to contact your IT provider as this is not an issue with Bright.
